Plantation Key is an island located in the upper Florida Keys on U.S. 1, between Key Largo and Windley Key. All of the key is within the Village of Islamorada as of November 4, 1997, when it was incorporated. It was originally inhabited by Native Americans at least 1000 years before Europeans settled in America. Bahamians also began immigrating here and participated in the export of pineapples and coconuts. Bootlegging took over as a major part of the economy when construction of the railroad and competition from Cuba threatened the profitability of exporting tropical produce up north. It is named for the pineapple plantation that was originally located on the island
